Addiction and Substance Misuse Counselling

Substance misuse and addiction can have a significant impact on an individual's health, relationships, and work. Our team of registered psychologists and counsellors provides evidence-based interventions to support adults experiencing substance use disorders.

In addition to individual counselling, we offer an Intensive Outpatient Addiction Treatment Program for those who require a higher level of support. This program combines group therapy sessions and structured support to assist clients in working towards recovery.

Approach to Substance Use and Addiction

Addiction is a complex condition requiring personalised treatment. Our collaborative method is structured to address the underlying causes of addiction and its impact on your mental and emotional wellbeing. We recognise that recovery is not a 'one-size-fits-all' process and tailor our approach to suit individual requirements.

Common Issues Addressed in Counselling

  • Addressing issues related to alcohol misuse, binge drinking, and alcohol dependence.

  • Providing support for those struggling with illicit drugs, prescription medication misuse, or other substance dependencies.

  • Support for individuals engaging in chemsex, which involves the use of drugs such as methamphetamine, GHB/GBL, and mephedrone to enhance sexual experiences. This practice can lead to significant mental health challenges, addiction, and risky behaviours.

  • Managing addiction alongside mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or trauma.

  • Strategies for maintaining recovery and managing triggers and cravings.

  • Addressing the impact of addiction on relationships and family dynamics.

Evidence-Based Interventions

Our practice is committed to using evidence-based interventions to provide effective therapeutic support. Our registered psychologists and counsellors are trained in a variety of therapeutic modalities, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): CBT helps individuals understand the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, providing practical strategies to change unhelpful patterns.

  • Motivational Interviewing (MI): A client-centred approach that enhances motivation and commitment to change.

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): Combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with mindfulness practices to help individuals manage intense emotions and reduce impulsive behaviours.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings without judgment while committing to actions aligned with their values.

  • Schema Therapy: Designed to help individuals identify and change deeply ingrained patterns (schemas) that contribute to substance use.

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR): An effective treatment for individuals with trauma histories that helps process memories that may contribute to addiction.

  • Relapse Prevention Therapy: Focuses on identifying high-risk situations and developing coping strategies to prevent relapse.
